THE GRAPE

Malbec is a dark purple wine grape variety that originated in France. It now plays a big role in Argentinian wine production and is grown extensively in other new world wine regions. While Malbec is well known as one of the six grapes allowed in the blend of red Bordeaux wine, it became less popular in Bordeaux after 1956 when frost killed off 75% of the crop. In France, Cahors is the primary region still growing Malbec, where it is often called Auxerrois or Côt Noir.

THE WINES

Argentine and Chilean Malbecs grown in vineyards that get plenty of sunshine are characterized by pronounced fruit flavours, particularly blackberry, plum and black cherry. The fruit notes are accompanied by flavours of chocolate, cocoa powder, violets, and depending on the amount of oak used, a sweet tobacco finish. French style Malbecs, like those of South America, are dark in colour. However, they tend to be less fruity with leathery notes and flavours of tart currant and black plum.

THE OCCASIONS

Any occasion that requires firing up the grill pairs well with opening a bottle of Malbec. Because it doesn’t have a super long finish, Malbec is a good choice to serve with leaner red meats, like lamb, flank steak or pork, and dark meat poultry. Its softer tannins make it an easy-drinking wine that can handle the herbs and spices often used on grilled meats.
